33 Ways to Use Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil has been around for thousands of years and is one of the most widely used essential oils for hair, nails, skin, and body.

Tea Tree Oil has many powerful benefits such as being Analgesic, Antibacterial, Antifungal, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-Acne, Antiseptic, Antiviral, Antimicrobial, Decongestant, and Insecticidal. Tea Tree Oil (TTO) is safe for kids, adults, and dogs.

The scientific name for tea tree is known as Melaleuca Alternifolia. Melaleuca’s name changed in 1732 by Captain James Cook when he added tea tree leaves to his water to make tea.

How the Oil is Made:

Leaves are taken from the melaleuca alternifolia tree and are placed in a stainless steel container, then steam is pumped into the tank and is passed through the plant material in order to collect the oil. “The yield of oil is typically 1 to 2% of wet plant material weigh” (1). Below is an image of the process.

How to Use Tea Tree Oil:

You can use tea tree oil undiluted for cuts, acne, and laundry, but most of the time you will want to make sure it is diluted with a carrier oil such as almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, or apricot oil before applying essential oils onto your face and body.

TTO for Skin:

1.Reduce Acne and Remove Blackheads: Add a tablespoon of carrier oil to a bowl and then add two drops of tea tree oil. Mix. Grab a cotton swab and dip into the mixture then apply on your face. Do this nightly.

2. Eczema and Psoriasis: For this, you can use shea butter, regular lotion or jojoba oil. For the shea butter and jojoba oil, add 2-3 tablespoons to a bowl and then add 5 drops of Tea Tree and Lavender Essential Oil and mix. For lotion, just add the 10 drops of EO to your lotion bottle and shake. Apply to the affected areas or on your legs and arms.

3. Facial Toner: Make a natural toner by combining ½ Cup Witch Hazel, ½ Cup of Distilled Water, 2 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar, and 7drops of Tea Tree, 4 drops of Lemon, and 3 drops of Lavender Essential Oils. You will need a 2 oz bottle to make this or a glass jar.

4. Blisters and Bruises: Add 1-2 drops of tea tree oil with 1 tsp of fractionated coconut oil and apply.

5. Wounds, Cuts, and Scratches: Get a q-tip and add 2 drops of the oil onto the q-tip. Rub the q-tip around the area but not directly on the cut, wound or scratch. For example: if you have a cat scratch that measures 1-2 inches long on your arm, don’t put the oil near the scratch. Put it on the sides of your arm, above, and below the scratch.

6. Poison Ivy, Chicken Pox, and Bug Bites: Grab a cotton swab and dip it in a mixture of 1-2 tbsp. of carrier oil and 3-4 drops of tea tree oil.

TTO for Hair:

7. Head Lice: According to headlicecenter.com, add 2 drops of the oil pure (no carrier oil) on your head every day for a maximum of 3 days. Or to dilute the mixture for a quicker approach add 10 drops of tea tree oil to a bowl and mix in with 3-4 tablespoons of vegetable oil or olive oil. Apply to your hair and coat. Leave on for 3 hours and then rinse and shampoo with your regular shampoo (2).

8. Dandruff: Add 5-7 drops of tea tree to your shampoo bottle to help get rid of your dandruff. You can also make a serum of fractionated coconut oil and tea tree and then apply after using shampoo and conditioner. You can either leave it in or rinse it out. It will make your hair shiny and healthy.

9. Nappy Hair: Get a spray bottle of any size. Fill it up with water 90% of the way and then add 4 drops of tea tree and 3 drops of roman chamomile. Shake the bottle and then spray on your hair. Leave it overnight.

TTO for Hands and Feet:

10: Athletes Foot: Apply 2-3 drops undiluted tea tree oil on the area every day for up to 3 weeks.

11. Toenail Fungus: Add 3-4 drops underneath each affected toenail 2x a day for 2 weeks. Your nail should either clear up or may fall off and regrow depending on how bad it is. You can also soak your feet in a mixture of water, apple cider vinegar and 4-5 drops of tea tree oil and sit for 20 minutes. Rinse after you are don. Use this method every night for 1 week.

12. Healthy Nails: Soak your nails each night for 4 days in 2 tbsp of almond oil and 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to help your nails grow and strengthen. Rinse off after 10 minutes.

13. Shoe Odor: Add 2 drops of tto along with 1 drop of your favorite citrus or floral oil to each shoe to get rid of the stink from your shoes.

TTO for the Mouth:

14. Cold Sores: Apply 1-2 drops of undiluted tto your cold sore using a q-tip. Do this every morning or night until it clears up.

15. Halitosis (bad breath): Add 1-2 drops to your mouthwash or toothpaste to prevent stinky breath. You can also add a few drops to water and swish.

16. Gum Inflammation and Bleeding: Fill a cup with water and add 3 drops of the oil and then swish for 30 seconds 1-2x a day. You can also oil pull with tea tree. It will help to reduce swelling and bleeding while whitening your teeth. Use coconut oil or sunflower oil and swish in your mouth for 20 minutes then rinse or brush your teeth afterward.

17. Dry, Chapped, Sunburned, or Cracked Lips:. Get a small bowl and add 2 drops of tea tree with 1/2 tsp. of almond oil and then apply on your lips.

TTO for the Body:

18: Ingrown Hair: Add 1-2 tbsp of aloe vera gel or coconut oil to a bowl. Mix in 3-4 drops of tea tree and then apply. Most useful after shaving or waxing.

19. Allergies and Colds: Diffuse 2 drops of tea tree and 2 drops of lemon oil to help combat the sniffles and congestion.

20. Asthma: Diffuse a few drops of tea tree oil with eucalyptus to help you breathe better and reduce symptoms from an asthma attack.

21. Body Aches: If your knees, back, neck, or feet are hurting…take some fractionated coconut oil and squirt some in your hand. Add 2 drops of tea tree and 2 drops of peppermint oil and mix in your hands and then apply to your body to help relieve any aches you have.

22. Laryngitis and Bronchitis: Heat up water in the microwave for 45 seconds to a minute until it is warm. Add 2-3 drops of tea tree and stir. Then gargle a few times at the first sign of a sore throat.

23: Emphysema and COPD: Take your diffuser and fill it up with water. Add 3 drops of tea tree oil and start inhaling. If you don’t have a diffuser use your stove and make semi-boiling water. Add your tea tree oil and inhale to help clear up your lungs. You can also add tto to your bath.

24. Arthritis: Add 1-2 tablespoons of almond or fractionated coconut oil to a bowl. Drop in 4 drops of tto and either 3 drops of ginger or sweet marjoram in the bowl. Stir and then apply on hands and body to help with inflammation and pain.

25. Shingles: Add 3-4 drops of tto and 2 drops of sweet marjoram with 1 tablespoon of apricot oil into a bowl and then spread the mixture onto your shingles. You can add this mixture to a spray bottle if it is easier for you to apply on your back. You can also use water if you don’t have carrier oil.

TTO for the House:

26. Mold and Bacteria: Grab a spray bottle and fill it up 80% of the way with distilled water. Add 1/2 cup of witch hazel or rubbing alcohol. Add 5 drops of tea tree oil and 3 drops of lemon. Shake and spray in your shower, bathroom sink, and kitchen.

27. Laundry: Add 3-4 drops in on your washer while the water is running to kill the bacteria on your clothes and in your washer. You can do this before or after adding your clothes.

TTO for Dogs:

28. Ringworm: Add a few drops of undiluted tto onto the affected area for a few days.

29. Ticks: Add 2-3 drops onto the bite undiluted to help relieve itchiness and pain.

30. Receding Gums and Toothache: Add 2 drops of tea tree oil onto a cotton ball and apply to the tooth or infected gums.

31. Cuts and Infections: Mix fractionated coconut oil with 2-3 drops of tea tree and then apply to the affected area to help it heal.

32. Coat: Add 5 drops of tea tree oil to your dog’s shampoo to help repel insects, and leave your dogs coat healthy, shiny, and smelling good.

33. Fleas and Hotspots: Grab a spray bottle and fill it with water. Add 4-5 drops of tea tree oil and then spray on the fleas to kill them. This will also help with inflammation and infection.
